Dear Chatham Commissioners,

As a Chatham resident (Fearrington Village) and a decades-long supporter of many environmental efforts, I urge you all to strongly support LEED building standards within Chatham County, a distinction that we are becoming well known for, and which will attract people and companies knowing Chatham is on the cutting edge of energy savings technology. I am for sure not a scientist, but I think it is clear LEED projects end up saving money as well as energy.

You are aware of the work of someone who is an expert - Alicia Ravetto http://chathamcitizens.org/resources/LinkedDocs/LEED_Chatham_Ravetto_21Feb2011.pdf - and I hope and trust people like her will be listened to carefully.

In the rush by some to save every last tax dollar now, I think it is prudent to think of some "expenses" as not really expenses, but investments in the future. One basic example I can think of is a state saving costs by applying a just-to-code asphalt layer on a road, only to have to redo it many years earlier than if it had been done the right way.

Please keep current LEED efforts going. I would be interested in your opinion on this important subject. Thanks.

Sincerely,

Bert Bowe
